The power of the Postsecondary Plan: helping students map their future
How Pathful's Postsecondary Plan turns scattered exploration into one living roadmap — career goals, school choices, scholarships, and next steps.

One of the most important questions a student faces is also one of the hardest: “What comes next?” Pathful's Postsecondary Plan helps students answer it — not with a single decision, but with a living roadmap that connects everything they've explored into a clear path forward.
What the Postsecondary Plan is
The Postsecondary Plan is a personalized planning tool that brings a student's career exploration together in one place. Instead of treating assessments, career research, school searches, and goal-setting as separate activities, it pulls them into a single roadmap students can build, revisit, and revise as their thinking evolves. It captures their top career choices, the schools or training programs they're considering, scholarships they want to pursue, and the goals and next steps that connect today to their future.
Why it matters
Career and college decisions can feel overwhelming because the pieces live in so many different places. The Postsecondary Plan reduces that overwhelm by giving students structure and ownership. It turns abstract aspirations into concrete steps, helps students see how their interests connect to real pathways, and gives educators and families a shared reference point for meaningful conversations. Most importantly, it's the student's own — a plan they build and direct, which makes them far more invested in following it.
How students build their plan
- Start with self-understanding — assessment results and explored interests inform the careers students add to their plan.
- Add career goals — students identify their top career choices and the steps each one requires.
- Explore and save schools — using School Profiles and Comparison, students add the colleges, universities, or training programs that fit their goals.
- Pursue funding — students attach scholarships from the Scholarship Search to their plan so financing is part of the picture from the start.
- Set SMART goals — with the Goal Setting tool, students break the journey into achievable short- and long-term milestones.
A living document, not a one-time form
Interests change, and so should the plan. Because the Postsecondary Plan is easy to revisit and revise, students can update it each year as they learn more about themselves and the world of work. Revisiting the plan at regular checkpoints — the start of a semester, after taking a new assessment, following a job-shadow experience — keeps it relevant and reinforces that planning is an ongoing process, not a single decision.
How educators can support it
Educators can make the Postsecondary Plan a cornerstone of career-readiness work: dedicate class time to building and updating it, use it as the anchor for one-on-one advising conversations, connect it to assignments and FlexLessons, and share it with families so everyone supports the same goals. Reporting tools help educators see who has started a plan and who needs encouragement, so no student is left without a roadmap.
