This post provides an overview of how to use Pathful's Work-Based Learning (WBL) Module to connect students with industry professionals through activities like career guest speaker sessions, mock interviews, resume reviews, and career preparation. It includes tips for organizing effective sessions and engaging students before, during, and after the event.
Session Ideas
- Virtual Career Fair: Create and manage multiple sessions around a given theme or time frame.
- Career Guest Speaker: Have someone come talk to your students about their career, what they do in the day-to-day of their job, and how they got where they are today.
- Career Preparation: A professional will provide advice and guidance to help prepare students for a specific career Pathway. Students can ask questions to determine if this is a career pathway they want to pursue.
- Real-World Connection: Your answer to, “why are we learning this?” Have an industry expert talk about how they use a curriculum topic in their daily work. This type of session will likely consist of a presentation followed by Q&A.
- Professional Development: By scheduling professional development with industry pros educators can stay current with industry insights and learn innovative teaching strategies and practical applications that can be integrated into their classrooms.
- Project Evaluation and Mentoring: Invite one or more industry experts to observe a final presentation or consult on the development of a student project. Students will present their projects and receive feedback. We ask that you cluster students in groups of at least three.
- Mock Interviews: Practice makes perfect. Give students a real-life interview experience, where they can practice presenting themselves to land the job. Help them prepare for common interview questions and industry specific distinctions with someone in their desire field.
- Resume and Cover Letter Review: A strong resume and cover letter opens the door for an interview. Students receive resume and cover letter feedback from someone sitting in the role they want, or request a session with an HR rep who can help their resume stand out.
- Special Event: Whether it's a major event, a special visitor, or an upcoming field trip, Pathful can arrange sessions with industry professionals before or after the event to support your plans.
